High Hopes
As most of you know, I work with childhood cancer as a dietitian for the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s hospital.
Today I was chatting to one of my patients' family about my swim and we got onto the topic of their cancer journey so far. I thought I would share as this is the kinda stuff that we all need to put things into perspective sometimes; it’s why I love my job so much.
For parents, a childs cancer diagnosis changes everything. Priorities in life aren’t the same anymore but despite the stress of uncertainty that they deal with every day they still manage to have patience, resilience and hope. Hope to them means much more than just their child or family, it is the hope that as a result of what their child has been through, medical advances in cancer treatment might continue to help them and other kids facing the same diagnosis. Seriously, inspiring stuff.
I came back to my office very grateful that I can provide a platform for people to contribute to these medical advances. Yes, it involves me swimming 1km in the ocean (possibly 2km if I’m fit enough), so technically the hard work is done for you all you need to do is D O N A T E.

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.
Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.
In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2014, our Can Too community has supported 19 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia.
