My big swim coming up!!
I am doing another 1km swim with Can Too to raise funds for cancer research. This year it is even more important as one of my 4 sisters, Evelyn, will have a lumpectomy at the end of the month.
This has been quite a shock for the family but I am very confident she will be fine as she is in the early stage of breast cancer. So my swimming has become even more significant now and I think of Evelyn every time I hit the water.
Wearing my neck to thigh swimsuit I brave the stingers (and there have been a lot this summer) and even a silky white shark one day which sailed past me and proceeded into the beach at Manly. It was a rather magnificent looking fish and I actually turned to follow it but realised I couldn’t have kept up anyway! It did appear on the local news and swam into the beach between the flags so very intelligent shark.
My friend Shelley and I generally swim 3 times a week from Manly to Shelly Beach so we have firsthand knowledge of all the pitfalls of ocean swimming. But with the professional coaches from Can Too and the water safety team surrounding us we feel safe and well supported. We also have a pool session each week which generally covers 1.6k so we are well and truly swim fit for our event at Palm Beach on 28 January. Let’s hope the ocean is kind to us that day.
