Why I CanToo: KG

08 Oct 2026

The CanToo-er who's practically part of the furniture
If you've spent any time around CanToo, there's a good chance that you've met Kieran Gallagher - or KG, as he's better known. And if you haven't met him yet? Get ready. It won't take long to understand why he's such a loved and valued member of the CanToo community.

Nearly 20 years. More than 30 run and swim programs. Countless friendships, fundraisers, hugs and certainly enough CanToo stories to fill a book. It's an impressive CanToo CV - but the numbers only tell part of the story.

Because KG's impact can also be found in the people he's encouraged, mentored, and volunteered alongside over the years. He's the person who notices
when someone needs a little extra support and puts his hand up. He shares his time, experience and knowledge generously, cheers from the sidelines and celebrates other people's wins as enthusiastically as his own.

He's not just a CanToo-er who keeps coming back. He's one of the people who helps make CanToo, CanToo.

Where it all began
KG's CanToo journey began in the summer of 2008, thanks to a push from one of his best mates and OG CanToo-er, Rich. Cancer had touched both their families, and the pair decided that the right thing to do was to "punch cancer back hard".

KG's first challenge was the 2km Cole Classic ocean swim - a fairly serious commitment for someone who described himself at the time as an "unfit fatty with no gills". But he had a plan: swim the distance, raise some money, and "throw a few sturdy slugs back" at the disease that kept taking "cheeky potshots" at people he loved.

So, he crafted his first CanToo fundraising email, opening with "I have a dream - that one day cancer will be as simple to cure as a cold", and ending with a characteristically KG challenge: "So if you don't like puppies and love cancer do nothing, otherwise dig deep and tell everyone... I double dare ya"

Honestly, it's difficult to argue with that. He raised over $3k that program.

Twenty years later... he's still throwing punches
Fast forward to 2026, and KG's commitment to the cause is as strong as ever. For him, CanToo isn't simply a fitness program you commit to for a season. It's a community who have collectively decided to do something hard - together.

"I love the empowerment that comes from helping others to throw arms over, achieve their goals and surprise themselves along the way," he shares. For KG, that's the magic of CanToo - the idea that thousands of ordinary people can collectively do something extraordinary.

A community with "big heads, bigger hearts and capable hands"
Over the years, KG has met thousands of CanToo-ers, who he believes share three things: "The heads they bring to the table are generally smart. The hearts they offer are pure and selfless. And the hands they put to the task are capable ones - this is truly the most wonderful group of humans I have ever met."

He's seen strangers become teammates, friends, and lifelong companions. He's seen people show up for each other on the good days and the hard ones. And he's become one of the people who does exactly that.

At the 2026 Ice Cold Classic, KG had already completed his own swim when he spotted fellow CanToo-er, JJ, at the start of her first event. He selflessly got back in the water to swim alongside her. "I still can't believe he committed to that without hesitation. THIS is what CanToo is about," JJ shared. "Throughout the entire program KG was so supportive, calming and informative. He was really the driving force behind giving me the confidence to keep going."

This example reflects an attitude that KG sums up simply: "Pain shared is pain halved. Joy shared is joy doubled." The hard stuff feels a little lighter when you're doing it together. And the joy of completing a challenge feels even bigger when the people beside you are just as invested in your success as you are.

Never underestimate the power of a onesie
When it comes to fundraising, KG's approach is simple: bring people together, have a great time and make a difference.

Over the years, he's pulled off plenty of memorable fundraisers, but the standout might be a legendary dumpling-fuelled, onesie wine tasting that raised an incredible $2,500.

In total, KG has raised more than $32,000 for CanToo - continuing to fight the disease that has touched so many people he loves. "Whether whacked or tickled - it touches everyone," he says. "Some people get up. Some don't. It's so random. There is no meritocracy to it."

That fight became even more personal in the past year, when KG had two melanomas caught early and successfully removed. "A generation ago this outcome would not have been a good one," he reflects - reminded by how far cancer diagnosis and treatment have come, and how important it is to keep pushing forward.

Because of CanToo
Looking back, KG describes his CanToo experience so far as "truly life affirming and life changing." He's developed a deeper sense of empathy and compassion, built friendships that feel like family, and discovered a lasting love for the ocean – one that has now led him down the path of becoming a life saver.

Here's to many more kilometres, laughs, hugs - and, one day, a world where cancer finally gets the knockout punch KG has been campaigning for since 2008.
