That's it for now!

Well sadly, the North Bondi event (which is my anniversary of ocean swim events) didn't happen on Sunday due to conditions! But not to be daunted, we headed to Manly for a swim in the washing machine...big surf and turbulent water...lots of fun!

You SMASHED it!

Our fundraiser was a big success! We raised about $12 thousand dollars that will go to Can Too to support the work of cutting edge young cancer researchers. Big thanks to Balgowlah Golf club and the band Rocking Horse for a fabulous evening. And thanks to all our friends and family who supported us with our prizes, their time, and their encouraging spirit for both our swimming and fundraising!! Thank you so much xx

The Pointy End!!!!!!

It's all happening! Big fundraiser this Friday which we've literally filled to capacity! Palm to Whale Beach last Sunday was brutal but really fun....hopefully Shark Island on Sunday if this cough goes away and then Bondi next week!! And then we roll right into the fall program...Can Too has been such an incredible experience...It's easy to get lost in the swimming but I haven't lost sight of the fact that we're doing this all for a reason. We're investing in the future...putting the money into young enthusiastic cancer researchers with their innovative and out of the square ideas, ...valuable researchers we could lose  if we don't support them. I'm certain there isn't one person I know who hasn't been touched by cancer...and far too many of my friends have actually been through it. So thank you all for your support both financially and personally for an activity that keeps me off the streets and a cause that will benefit us all. xx

Half Way

Well, we're about half way through this year's CanToo program and I am training to do the Big Swim in January from Palm Beach to Whale Beach. It's between 2-3 kilometres...the distance doesn't worry me as much as I've become stronger through training in the last year ...but the big surf still does!!! Thankfully, we have the best water safety crew around that always make you feel safe. And  I've found my happy place at the back of the pack!!!  But I'm not taking on the real challenge...That's being fought everyday by a member of your family, a best friend, a work colleague or a fellow swimmer. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer which is why funding research is so important...especially the work of young researchers coming into the field...I would love your support...

I can't believe it's been a year since my first CanToo. And I can't believe how CanToo has changed me as a swimmer. I'm still slow and my heart still beats much much faster when the surf is up...but that panic that grabs your throat and robs you of precious air has settled ..a bit..... at least I think it has. The roundtrip swim from Manly to Shelley where I spend most of my time, has been pretty smooth this winter so I may think differently once the summer tides set in! But what I have even more this year, is a swimming community. People I've met through CanToo who wait for me, encourage me and guide me if they see that panic flash back in my eyes. People who give up their swim to plod next to you...people who keep doubling back to make sure I'm ok, people who just keep an eye on, just to make sure I'm ok. They don't have to, it just seems to be part of the ethos of this group for which I'm very grateful. And that's just one part of CanToo...there's so much more....more to come.
