SMH Half Marathon 2016 - Sydney

I'm training with Can Too for the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2015, our Can Too community has supported 14 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia.

Thank you for supporting me!

‘It’s so much fun and I can’t believe I’m going to achieve this goal that I never thought possible. A great program and team support is making it possible. You Can Too!’

My Updates

10km and smashed it!!

Saturday 12th Mar

End of week 5 and the 10km run was conquered! I did it bang on the allotted time of 1:10 thanks to Megsy who was my pacer and coach Louise who kept me running at the end. I also had some fantastic support from Isabel who came along and was the energy champion this morning with Kate (not my Kate), Nick and Wiley the dog. 5 weeks ago would never have thought that I could run 10 km in one go (I may have walked about 80-100 metres all up). You know I might just make it to that 21km!!!

Sadly I did have some bad luck on the way home from the run with a flat tyre in the Kluger. Not happy Jan!!! The Nappy San is definitely getting a workout this week for my CanToo shirt.

What have I become ...

Wednesday 9th Mar

Tonight we ran 5 x 800metres and thanks to my trusty pacer Steph I did it without missing a beat. No walking and we appeared to pick up the pace. I also did my last 800m with a stitch and didn't stop. On my way home I was driving down King Street Newtown and I noticed Doughnut Time. WTF?? Why have I not seen this establishment before. I seriously considered stopping and get a cheeky couple of doughnuts but I resisted and keep driving. 5 weeks ago I would be illegally parking to get some doughnuts in my gob. #whathaveibecome #icantoo #imayjustbecomearunner

8km - who would have thought ....

Saturday 5th Mar

Knocked over a run of 8km today and only walked about 50 metres all up. I am trusting the program and in all honesty I am seriously surprising myself. Who would have thought four weeks ago that I would have been able to run 8km straight and more importantly that I would have wanted to do it.

I really do have to praise the whole Can Too team and the training program. It's amazing. I've gone from totally doubting myself in week one to totally thinking I can do this in week four.

Week 4 - Bring it on!!!

Wednesday 2nd Mar

I've just finished my Wednesday night track session. 5 x 600m with 200m recoveries all without stopping. I am quietly surprising myself that when I pace myself appropriately I can actually do this running thing. I won't admit it to coach Louise or Maxy but maybe, just maybe I might be starting to enjoy myself!!!!

I have felt quite guilty though as I haven't been able to get to Pilates this week due to work commitments. Gotta get there as I do need to work on my core.

This running thing is apparently good for weight loss - I have lost 4.3kg since I commenced the program. Only got another 18kg to go to get to my goal weight.

maybe I can do this running thing ...

Wednesday 24th Feb

Week 3/14 - Tonight saw me run 4.8km continuously without stopping. WTF??!!?? 5 x 800m with 200m recoveries. I ran with a pacer and I seemed to get my breathing sorted. I actually ran for the entire distance plus all but two of the recoveries.

Who have I become?? Surely not a runner. Only time will tell.

4km in less than 30 mins ... (Saturday 13th February)

Saturday 20th Feb

My first Saturday training session with the Hills Raisers and I ran (maybe walked a little bit) 4km in under 30 mins. Who would of thought that I could do that. I most certainly didn't! To make matters worse I got stung twice by wasps on the run. I can't honestly say that I enjoyed myself but I certainly did feel very happy with myself after I'd done it.

My fellow Can Tooers keep telling me - 'trust the program' so I will.

Onwards & upwards! Til next time.

Training Session One - crushed it!!

Wednesday 10th Feb

Okay - so I signed up at like 5pm and had my first training session at 6:30pm. It definitely wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be ... Don't get me wrong I didn't enjoy it at the time but I didn't struggle with it as much as I thought I would. Let's see how the old body pulls up tomorrow morning.

Great crew who are very supportive and friendly as well.

What have I done??!!??

Wednesday 10th Feb

Okay peeps - after months & months of thinking about it & making excuses as to why I couldn't do it I've bitten the bullet and signed up for the 2016 Can Too SMH Sydney Half Marathon.

It's gonna be tough and I'm fully aware of it. I know I am going to struggle with it and lack some motivation but hopefully I will get there with out too much trouble! I also acknowledge that it is going to be very difficult to get to the training every Saturday especially when winter sports kick off and it's my weekend with the kids.

Running is definitely not my friend - I hate it, actually always have but I've been assured by Maxy that I will grow to love it. I guess only time will tell!!

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation towards my goal
