Roughly 1 in 2 of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime. This is a statistic that we need to change.

So, I've decided to take on a personal challenge with the support of CanToo, to raise funds along the way that could be life-changing. From supporting the ongoing health promotion work CanToo provides, to funding incredible, innovative early-career cancer researchers.

Why am I doing this?

The ocean has always made me nervous, but I’m diving in for something that matters more than fear.

It started with a call from my friend the week training began: “Want to join?” I didn’t know much about the challenge, but I knew it was for cancer research and that was enough to say yes. Then I turned up and discovered the committed 14 week ocean swimming challenge of Cantoo.

This cause is close to my heart because I lost my dear friend Dani to breast cancer and have family members that have had near misses with the disease. Every stroke I take in the ocean is not just about swimming, it’s about my beloved family and friends who have faced cancer, overcoming my fears in the ocean, pushing past old limits, and showing my daughters what lifelong learning really looks like.

I stopped learning to swim properly around age 7, so I’m relearning from scratch and why not up the stakes and do it in the ocean?
