2026 Autumn Ocean Swim

Autumn challenge for health

I'm supporting cancer research and the health of people in Australia

Roughly 1 in 2 of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime. This is a statistic that we need to change.

So, I've decided to take on a personal challenge with the support of CanToo, to raise funds along the way that could be life-changing. From supporting the ongoing health promotion work CanToo provides, to funding incredible, innovative early-career cancer researchers.

We desperately need to find more solutions to cancer, from prevention, to treatment, and ultimately a cure. Please support me on my journey with CanToo by donating to my fundraising page today!

Thank you for your support!

My Updates

A big last week with a great goal event

Monday 4th May
It was great to be involved in yesterday’s event at Bondi. Thanks to the wonderful Kate for swimming alongside me in the 1km event.  Less stopping required this week - still took in the view from the back stretch.

I also enjoyed our last couple of training sessions at the pool & beach. Fun fact shared about Sean our Manly beach coach: who once featured in nutrigrain cereal advertising as the Ironman.

Participating in this program has had such a positive personal impact for me. To have had support from so many lovely sponsors is also so meaningful in support for the work of CanToo. Very grateful!

My first event

Sunday 26th Apr
Wednesday evening training - it’s amazing the effect of a bit of training. I was a bit late but still managed around 1.5km and with much less effort than I recall a few months ago.

The highlight this week though, was completing the 1km event at the South Maroubra SLSC Ocean Swim. Such a spectacular day, a wonderful event and such amazing support from mentors and coaches. Thanks to Kg who swam with me for the duration and shared a moment looking back to shore from the buoys that we swam out to.

It was a bonus bumping into Lani: an old friend and colleague. Fun to have been welcomed by her swimming group - the Bondi Fireballs - in their ritual fireball shot post swim.

Week 10

Sunday 19th Apr
What an amazing morning at Manly yesterday! I saw a blue groper and a wobbygong - remarkable that I could notice while swimming - and loads of different schools of fish! The low swell certainly made it easier and so I did manage to swim across to Shelly and back.

Great pool session as well on Wednesday with around 1.6km clocked up.

I’ve also organised a fundraising event for 8th May: a movie night at Roseville cinemas - The Devil Wears Prada 2.  Here is the URLfor tickets. You may need to cut & paste

Weeks 6-9

Sunday 12th Apr
There have been a few weeks of reduced sessions.

I attended the Australian Frailty Network Summit in Brisbane 26-27 March carefully booking flights to be able to manage Wednesday night training and Saturday at Manly. Neither transpired with Saturday cancelled due to poor conditions after storms…and those same storms caused cancellation of my return flight.

A tick to Pool training for the next 2 weeks with a Saturday cancelled.

I’m currently on leave enjoying time with friends and instead of the ocean swim I joined a Park Run and am intending on doing laps in the resort pool

Week 5

Saturday 14th Mar
Gorgeous morning at Manly! We swam from Shelley to Manly but I really struggled to keep going - mostly due to anxious thoughts which also affects breathing.

Members of the group spotted a dusky whaler and a turtle, but I was too focussed on keeping on going to see anything much.  I hope that one day the idea of seeing a dusky whaler won’t friek me out.  I was aware of fish at times - it’s amazing passing schools of small and not so small fish.

It’s Kara’s birthday today so straight to birthday lunch!

Week 4

Saturday 7th Mar
Wednesday pool sessions are great for de-stressing after work. I’m starting to feel less puffed.

Today we practiced some surf skills in a section of the beach that had “dangerous current” signs😩…but all was well with great support.  It’s so helpful gaining knowledge of the surf and practicing. Quite a work out!

Week 2

Saturday 21st Feb
Perfect conditions at Manly today for our swim from Shelley Beach to the south end of Manly Beach.  The marine park was in fine form - spectacular - with a turtle spotted by earlier swimmers (including Heidi! 🥰 work colleague & seasoned ocean swimmer, who has taken me snorkelling on a few occasions)

It is reassuring swimming in a large group with mentors and with coaches on paddle boards spotting.

Working towards not losing my puff

Week 1

Saturday 14th Feb
I’ve started!

Lots of memories getting back in a pool to do laps. Sooo long ago!!  Much room to improve my swimming fitness. Feeling grateful for great coaches.

We swam at the nets today at Manly on the harbour side: round the edge, diving down/pushing off the bottom, swimming in pods of 4.

Looking forward to the journey with this bunch.

Watching conditions

Saturday 31st Jan
There is just over a week to go till our first weekly midweek pool session.

Prep to date has included downloading the Shark Safe App 😆

Hoping that conditions change soon for weekend ocean sessions at Manly!

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation towards my goal
