I'm walking the Larapinta Trail to support cancer research and prevention with Can Too Foundation
In 2004 when I turned 40, I decided to take up running. Over a number of years, I progressed from barely making a couple of kms, to running half marathons.
Then when I turned 50 in 2014, I decided to celebrate by training for and running my first full marathon in Melbourne.
What would be my next challenge? It turned out to be something I hadn’t trained for. In June 2021 I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Although I lost my right kidney, in a way I was lucky as the cancer was contained and nearly 3 years on, has not returned.
Now I'm turning 60, I decided I wanted to do something that was not only a challenge, a celebration of life as well as way to help others who may face that diagnosis that affects too many Australians each year. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This means that potentially someone we love may have to battle cancer, and that's a statistic that needs to change.
So, that's where the Can Too Foundation came in! Im walking the Larapinta trail in Central Australia and raising funds that will go towards innovation in the prevention, care, and control of cancer.
