Such a high... so good to find another Cantoo runner in the last 5-10km

Well I did it!

I am so relieved, happy, and excited to beat my grim expectations of pain, overwhelm, and maybe even dropping out.

- Cried crossing the start line (didn't think I'd ever be here again)
- Cried crossing the finish line (even less likely I'd ever be here again)
- I even shuffled up most hills, meaning I ran almost the whole way!!!

24,999 runners... and me

Tears at the start line.

So emotional to be here and in running gear. Not sure I'm going to make it.

Yes, 21.1 km is a long way on foot.

Especially if you:
1. Are supposed to run the whole way
2. Haven't run more than 14.5km in training
3. Spent more time in rehab than in running shoes in the last 2.5 years

A crappy starting point

In January 2024 I wasn't going anywhere further than hospital.

After a nasty but not exciting ski accident, I messed up BOTH knees. In what felt like only a millisecond, I re-ruptured my recently repaired (strong) right ACL and tore my left MCL.

Orthopaedic acronyms aside, the practical and painful impact of this was to make me unsteady on both legs because both knees were unstable.

None of the health care professionals I saw for these injuries said, "Sure, you can take up distance running again".

Several asked WHY I keep skiing...

But I set myself a goal, going into surgery, to grind my way back through all the stages of injury, recovery, surgery, rehab, setbacks, and steady progress to get back to running.

Who better to do it with than Cantoo? Given that I didn't know if I could ever run even 5km, let alone 10 or 20km, I needed all the help I could get.

About Cantoo...

1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This means that potentially someone we love may have to battle cancer, and that's a statistic that needs to change.

So how does my running help? That's where the Can Too Foundation came in. Can Too provides professionally coached training programs for participants of any fitness level to run, swim and cycle their way to a healthier lifestyle and a cancer-free world.

In return for this, participants like me raise valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care, and control of cancer.

Since 2005, Can Too Foundation has trained over 22,000 participants and raised over $30,000,000 to invest in over 150 cancer research grants.
