I'm training with Can Too for the 14km Great Ocean Road run!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2016, our Can Too community has supported 12 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia and Cancer Council NSW.

Thank you for supporting me!

3 weeks to go...

Posted by Kate, Saturday 29th Apr

Counting down to race day...it's coming around super fast!  Only 3 weeks until the event.

This week training was really tough - especially in the cold, windy and rainy conditions that Melbourne turned on for the night.  There was a small group of us that were crazy enough to turn up.  I guess the rain was the motivation we all needed to run even faster to get the session over and done with. (Photo attached!)

It put us in a good condition for our longest run yet which we did this morning.  The half marathon group I joined ran 18kms and I ran 14kms! Our longest distance yet with lots of PB's made for the day.

Super happy I made the distance, which makes me more comfortable I will make it on race day!

The Mushroomgate Incident

Posted by Kate, Wednesday 12th Apr

What a week it has been!!!  I've had a very tough week where I've of been unable to train due to circumstances outside of my control.

Last week after our 3km time-trial, (I'm happy to say I got a time of 20.16) we went out as a team for dinner where I unfortunately had an allegic reaction to mushrooms.  I know I am allergic and advised the staff when ordering that I was and to please ensure my meal does not contain mushrooms (something I always do whenever I eat out!).   I was eating my meal and feeling a bit itchy, when I found some mushrooms hidden in the sauce on my plate.   I stopped eating and the team was quite worried.  I always carry antihistamines, so I had a number of those then headed home before taking a few more.  The next 48 hours is a bit of a daze as I took stronger pills prescribed by a doctor.  As such, I was unable to train over the weekend, which was very frustrating as we are only about 5 weeks out from event day.

Huge shoutout to the team for being super supportive and checking in on me. Special thanks to the Albert Park team captain Sheanna and a shoutout to Fel who was happy to be on standyby if I ever need an EpiPen in future! (Thanks Fel ;) although I'm hoping that is never needed!).

This night will now be known affectionatly as the "Mushroomgate Incident"!

Great Ocean Road Training.... 3 weeks in

Posted by Kate, Sunday 19th Mar

I am now 3 weeks into the 14km GOR (Great Ocean Road) training.  Yesterday I trained with the Albert Park 23km pod and I joined them for the second half of their run - doing 7kms along the Yarra river.  After having some calf muscle soreness and cramping the weeks prior, I was very hesitant on how I would go this week and if I would make the longer distance.  With such an amazing team of people to support my, I did make the distance and the best thing, it was the best I'd felt after a long run since starting the 14km program!

It's times when it feels like it has been a long week, I've had some injuries, and the thoughts jump into my mind saying it might be easier to stay at home in bed than get up and go for a run on a Saturday morning.  However, when I'm out running with the Can Too crew, I remember that I am part of a team and we are all in this together and it is their encouragement, and yours, that get me through this.

9 weeks to go!

Planning for 2017 already!

Posted by Kate, Wednesday 12th Oct

So I've been having so much fun with Can Too and running, that even before event day, I have enrolled to do the 14km Great Ocean Road Run in 2017!

Here's hoping I make the 10km distance this Sunday and then can keep my motivation going until May 2017 for a fun weekend away for the next event.

Thankyou to all my sponsors so far for the Melbourne Marathon - it means so much to me.  Your donations are more than welcome for this event and still go towards the same great cause!

I look forward to sharing my journey with you all over the coming months.

Cheers,

Kate xx
