Remembering Cathie

Can Too Beyond

Remembering Cathie

In late 2014, my wife Cathie was a vibrant, fit and much-loved mother of three teenage boys. 2015 was to be a year of milestones, her 50th and her eldest son’s HSC and 18th.But just over eight months later, in August, Cathie succumbed to a very aggressive and rare cancer of the biliary system (liver, gallbladder and bile ducts).

The early symptoms of these cancers can easily be mistaken for nausea, indigestion, reflux and bloating. By the time something is evidently wrong, the cancer has usually spread to surrounding organs and advanced to a stage where treatment is very difficult and the prognosis is poor.

Since Cathie’s devastating death I’ve made it my goal to try to make more people aware of rare cancers like these and raise funds to contribute to the incredible research being undertaken by Cure Cancer Australia and Cancer Council NSW.

To me, understanding Cathie’s story is important for a number of reasons:

1. Little is known of these cancers
2. Diagnosis is difficult and by the time the symptoms appear, the cancer is well advanced and the prognosis is poor
3. While such cancers are considered rare, particularly in young people, survival is very unlikely and, as survival rates for common cancers continue to improve, “rarer” cancers will become more significant killers
4. Little is known about the causes of these cancers or their relation to any patient specific conditions
5. Treatment is complex and resource intensive and patient suffering is severe.
When I heard about CanToo and the amazing work it does encouraging people to pursue their fitness goals in the name of cancer research, I decided to launch [name of fundraising page] with an initial fundraising goal of $25,000.
I’m personally planning to kick this off by running 5kms inthe Manly Fun Run next May (

http://www.manlyfunrun.org/). Cathie and I lived for a while in Manly so we not only have a connection to the area but I like the fact there are runs accessible to anyone (2kms, 5kms, 10kms), whatever their fitness level.

I invite Cathie’s family, friends and anyone with a connection to my beautiful late wife to join me, so together we can reach our goal and do what we can to prevent others suffering from these terrible cancers.

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation towards my goal

Cathie was one of my best friends at school. It was horrible to know that she had passed. I also lost my mum to liver cancer nearly 8 years ago & every year I hold a biggest morning tea to raise funds to hopefully one day find a cure for this horrid disease.
