Over the past twenty years, Can Too Foundation has funded over 140 early-career cancer researchers in Australia, with thanks to our incredible participants and supporters. This support during the early phase of their careers enabled them to develop track records and leadership skills, setting them up for long-term success in a highly competitive environment.
This week is National Skin Cancer Action Week; an important reminder to us all to look after ourselves, particularly staying sun-safe to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
At CanToo, we are proud to have also supported the early-career research of Professor Nikola Bowden back in 2013-2014, at the University of Newcastle's School of Medicine and Public Health.
With CanToo funding, Professor Bowden was able to take the critical next step in understanding why the DNA repair mechanism wasn’t working in melanoma, revealing a ground-breaking discovery - that the repair process could be switched back on using a chemotherapy drug.
Since this initial project, her work has developed into a multi-phase clinical program, making progress towards better treatment opportunities for people with melanoma.
The funding Professor Bowden received from CanToo was critical at the early stage in her career, as it enabled her to get her work off the ground and test new ideas.
And with patients already benefiting from her research, we're excited to see what's to come in the future for Professor Bowden and her work.
Professor Bowden has extended her heartfelt thanks to everyone who has donated to, or taken part in a CanToo program, for helping us turn initial ideas into practical solutions for people with cancer.
From the team at CanToo, we also want to say thank you. We really do rely on your support to fund cancer researchers in Australia, just like Professor Nikola Bowden.
