Summer Ocean Swim 1km 2024

1 Down and 1 to Go

DID IT!

I successfully completed my first ocean swim thanks to our incredible coaches, team captains, mentors, and the amazing CanToo community.

Above all, your generous support gave me over 3,000 reasons and the motivation I needed (apart from cancer research) to complete the first stage of my challenge - yep, that's right I still have the North Bondi swim to go this coming Sunday.

On the advice of our coaches I entered the 1km swim event at Palm Beach as conditions around the point to Whale Beach were described as a "washing machine" and only suitable for experienced swimmers. Needless to say, there were plenty of seasick swimmers exiting the water...

This Sunday I'm hoping to take it up a notch. If conditions permit I'm going to attempt to swim in the 2km event at North Bondi.

As long as cancer continues to take lives and health, Can Too Foundation will keep challenging it. And so will I.

Wish me luck and I'll send you another update after my North Bondi swim.

Paul

7 Nighttime sleeps to Go

I can't believe that by this time next week I will have completed my first ocean swim event. Thank you to everyone who has donated to my fundraising page. Your donations,
1. help smash the funding barrier that prevents too many early career cancer researchers in Australia for pursuing promising ideas, and
2. will continue to help push boundaries until the impossible is possible, and all cancers are easily manageable or curable.

We have been back in the water training since 6 January and have loved every minute of it. In fact, not only will I swim in the Palm Beach event on 28 January as originally planned, but I've now added the North Bondi Clear Water Classic to my challenge on 11 February.

CanToo prides itself on the 3c's - coaching, community, and cause. It's a unique combination that has given an ordinary swimmer like me and extraordinary way to smash barriers so that I can achieve my goal.

Check out a few new photos at the bottom of my page. Not exactly the most graceful thing you'll ever see in the water, but I manage to stay afloat and get to the end.

Wish me luck for Sunday and watch out for a post event update on how I went.

Thanks,

Paul

Week 4 - Taking on the Challenge

Hello and thank you to everyone who has donated to my fundraising page. Every donation to the Can Too Foundation helps make what’s impossible right now, possible in the future.

Speaking of which, I truly believe that my ocean swim training is assisting me to leave my limitations behind and achieve more than I ever thought was possible. By this weekend I will have completed 4 ocean swim training sessions at Mona Vale Beach. The waves are getting bigger and the distances longer, but I am committed to smashing the barriers to a longer, healthier life for myself – and for people with cancer.

With you as my ‘cheer squad’ behind me I am confident that I will achieve my ocean swimming and fundraising goals. Your donation to Can Too will ultimately help save and extend the lives of the mums, brothers, mates and work colleagues who need more solutions for their cancers.

I’ve added a few pics to the bottom of this page so that you can see what I’ve been up to.

As long as cancer continues to take lives and health, Can Too Foundation will keep challenging it.

Thank you,

Paul

Help me raise money for early career cancer research, and make the impossible possible

Will you help me smash the barriers to a longer, healthier life for people with cancer?

Cancer still takes the lives and health of too many of us. In 2023 it is estimated that about 163,000 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer (446 per day) and 51,000 will die (140 per day). This means that potentially someone we love may have to battle cancer, and that’s a statistic that needs to change.

And yet, brilliant Australian cancer research is still not adequately funded.

I know from my personal experience how it feels to be told “you have cancer”. So, I asked myself, “what can I do to help?” This year I’ve decided to put my limitations behind me and achieve more than I thought possible by learning to ocean swim. As someone who cannot swim 50 meters in a pool the thought of participating in a 1km ocean swim terrifies me. That’s where the Can Too Foundation comes in! With their support I’ll have a whole ‘cheer squad’ of people to help me reach my goal. I’ll train alongside people who are all motivated by the same cause, and who’ll inspire and encourage me.

In return, I’ll be fundraising for brilliant Australian cancer research that might never otherwise get the backing it deserves. Since 2005, Can Too Foundation have trained over 20,000 participants, and raised over $33,000,000 to invest in over 200 cancer research grants.

It would be really fantastic if you could sponsor me. Your donations to Can Too will ultimately help save and extend the lives of the huge numbers of Australians – the mums, brothers, mates, and work colleagues – who need more solutions for their cancers.

As long as cancer continues to take lives and health, Can Too Foundation will keep challenging it.

Thank you for your support!

Paul
