Week 3 - Running in the Rain (again)

Week 3 of my training was a very wet week. Luckily the rain seemed to hold off whilst we were out on the track which made it more bearable. The humidity heated things up a bit but hey, that's training!

Wednesday night saw us running laps under the bridge to improve our form and learning how to pace ourselves - 5 reps of 800m with each rep a little faster than the last. It is an interesting concept of running slower but crossing the finish line in a faster time. Or at leat that is how it felt and the stop watch doesn't lie.

Wednesday night also saw our second guest speaker from Running Science, a sports shoe shop in Rozelle which I will be visiting in the not too distance future to upgrade my wheels for the remainder of the training and race day. I never realised how much science goes into a running shoe and being 'fitted' properly for a running shoe will definitely increase my confidence on the track which will result in a faster time.

Our long run on Saturday was over the brige to Hyde Park, the first time I've run along the Cahill Expressway above Circular Quay and even though you probably don't notice it when driving, there is quite a long, grinding hill on the western end of the Expressway. I'm starting to feel my legs becoming stronger and more able to cover the distance. There is still a long way to go but I've achieved alot in just 3 weeks and running 8km in 45 minutes puts me in a good position to achieve my target time.

A big shout out this week to the people who have sponsored me and dontated to Cure Cancer Australai and Cancer Council NSW:

  • Mum and Steve - thank you for your generous donation of $50
  • My amazng girlfriend, Prue - thank you not only for your donation but your support through the training program :)

Bring on a drier Week 4 and a more training. I'm starting to get hooked on this long distance running thing.

Week 2 - Running in the rain

Week 2 of training for the SMH half marathon is almost complete and it has definietly been a week of firsts.

On Wednesday night we completed a benchmark in order to track our progress through the 14 week training program. I completed the 3km time trial in 15 minutes and 18 seconds and it's safe to say I didn't have a thing left to give as I crossed the finish line. In fact I think I ran out of puff with 500m. Thanks to Mike the coach for pushing me over the last stretch to get home in a good time.

This was followed by a couple of drinks at the Kirribilli Hotel to celebrate our hard work and a chance to get to know more of the team.

Saturday morning was another first. Running in the rain! Our course took us from Kirribilli up to Waverton Bowling Club which involved a couple of hills over the 6km run. Thankfully the worst of the rain stayed away and we only got drizzled on. Even though it's an early start on a wet day it feels great to be out being active on the weekends.

Lastly, (and I'll do this every week) I'd ike to give a big shout out to the people who have sponsored me and dontated to Cure Cancer Australai and Cancer Council NSW:

  • Brenda and David - thank you for your generous donation of $50
  • Dad, Georgie and the fam - a massive shout out for your $250 donation. It's a massive boost to kick start my fundraising.

Have a good week everyone and stay tuned for more updates next week. Bring on Week 3.

I'm training with Can Too for the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2016, our Can Too community has supported 12 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia and Cancer Council NSW.

Thank you for supporting me!

‘It’s so much fun and I can’t believe I’m going to achieve this goal that I never thought possible. A great program and team support is making it possible. You Can Too!’

Thank you to my Sponsors
