Sydney 2km or 2.5km Ocean Swim 2017

Fishies and Big Waves, and Distance. Oh My!

Got to Manly Beach Saturday morning and was treated by some biggish ocean waves.  Sh-it.  We are gonna swim in THAT?!?!?

One of my biggest challenges to date has been motion sickness in the water.  Yes, it can happen.  Breathing properly in the water is hard enough with out the tummy turning and all that fun.  By now I have tired several remedies and remedy combos. All sorted!  Thank goodness for herbal teas (a mix of peppermint and ginger).  I have a nice hot herbal tea blend in the morning on the drive out to the water as well as a soothing tummy chew.  And by the looks of the waves this week, I figured it out not a moment too soon.

Getting out took some focus.  The two things I focused on this week was catching myself going back to sloppy windmill swimming when I was getting tired or otherwise distracted and trying to avoid really strong kickers in front of me.  Now that I am not back of the pack due to lack of oxygen, I actually have to swim amongst the crowd.

All said, this happened!

Hot in Sydney

It was a really hot day here in Sydney!  100F/ 38C (yes, I had to look up the conversion to Celsius).  What better way to cool off than to join my pod people for our weekly pool swim.  Boom!  Nailed it.  And how was your evening?

Cold Cure- Get Moving

I am not too old to learn new tricks!  As Christmas was rounding the corner and J and I were preparing for international holiday guests, I was unlucky enough to get stuck with a summer cold. I had skipped a couple runs feeling too run down and not trusting my body with withstand and consistent impact like that that running requires. I almost skipped swim practice but I remembered that I had made a commitment to my pod and my coaches to attend.  It ended up being a great thing.  The endorphins picked up.  I got some good clean air into my working lungs.  I forgot for a bit that I was sick.  It was the most comfortable I had felt for days!  I think it reduced the duration of my sick time overall.  So there you have it.  When you get a cold, go for a swim.

Goal for 14th December

Wednesday night training in the pool tonight. My goal for the evening will be to NOT run into the ropes. My elbow is getting a bit tired of me slamming it against the weighted plastic. The bruising is still around from last week and the weeek before. Sometimes pain is part of the process.

I'm training with Can Too for the 2/2.5km Ocean Swim!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2016, our Can Too community has supported 12 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia and Cancer Council NSW.

Thank you for supporting me!

‘It’s so much fun and I can’t believe I’m going to achieve this goal that I never thought possible. A great program and team support is making it possible. You Can Too!’
