John Flynn

Sydney Ocean Swim 1km Sydney 2016

Palm Beach

Well, well, well... Palm beach, named after their favourite schnitzel topping, definitely turned it on yesterday. Rumours were rife you weren't going to be allowed into the Northern Peninsula suburb unless you wore your favourite Ralph Lauren polo, boating shoes and drove a Range Rover, but we were able to slip passed security and meet, en masse, beach side.

Weather was perfect, and everyone was bright eyed and bushy taled. We charged, head first, into the water, tackling the 1 foot swell head on. Our enthusiasm was not to be dampened by the glut of seaweed that greeted us upon entry. Our resolve was unwavering, and we splashed and frolicked around for a good hour.

Practice makes slightly better than previously

When people refer to me now, they say "John Flynn? Oh, you mean the swimmer"

I've acquired some new orange swimming togs. Orange is the new black as they say. I can see the records tumbling already.

I started work this morning at 0630 but had recently found out that the pool opposite work at Hornsby opens at 0530. Got out of bed half an hour earlier and smashed out 10 laps! Boom!

What's got into me?

Manly at 0845 tomorrow for another beach session.

Its begun

So week 1 is done and dusted. As enjoyable as it is, I have no idea how to breathe properly, wear the goggles correctly and keep water out of my ears. The swimming cap hardly fits on my massive head and I won't even bother describing how I look with it on combined with my 'nothing left to the imagination' swimmers.

I look forward to my progression through the 13 weeks, but I can't get ahead of myself. I'm getting encouraged to do the 2.5km swim rather than the 1km swim I originally signed up to. The coaches must think they have an Olympian on their hands! See you in Rio!

I'm training with Can Too for the 1km Ocean Swim!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2014, our Can Too community has supported 19 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia.

Thank you for supporting me!

‘It’s so much fun and I can’t believe I’m going to achieve this goal that I never thought possible. A great program and team support is making it possible. You Can Too!’
