Sydney 21km SMH Half Marathon 2017

My first half marathon!

After living in Sydney for close to 4 years now and seeing how people here live in active gear, I finally persuaded my better half to join me in running a half marathon. Little did I know that he would take to it like a fish in water and I would be sitting on the side lines. I've been playing football (soccer) in Sydney since I arrived, and love the feeling of being in a team, getting fit and sweating out the previous evenings gin intake. What better reason to run a half marathon?

As it has been a couple of weeks since training began, I thought it worth sharing with my loyal followers (thanks Dad!) my experiences and thoughts so far.

  • Runners are really fit - my first week of training included an "easy" 4km run. Those who had ran 1/2s or full marathons in the past were miles ahead, literally. That'll be me next time round right?
  • Saturday mornings running are actually great - waking up at 5.30am on a Saturday morning is not my usual way to start the weekend BUT, having a soy latte in hand having finished my run was a wonderful feeling. Anything to get the coffee in earlier, rather than debating the benefits of cafe bought coffee for 30 minutes with the better half.
  • Running makes you tired - So I am a fan of weight training, but since starting to run multiple times a week and with the start of soccer season upon us, I have been feeling super sluggish and EATING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT. No more pizza, promise. See below, the image, the girl in blue who looks like she has finished two full marathons - that's me. Point proven.

Anyway, no more boring talk, tonight is track training, so there will be more insightful updates next week, when it might be appropriate to explain why I chose CanToo!

Hopefully this week I will get my first sponsor (if I remember to send out the link!) So whoever you are - thank you xxx

I'm training with Can Too for the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2016, our Can Too community has supported 12 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia and Cancer Council NSW.

Thank you for supporting me!

‘It’s so much fun and I can’t believe I’m going to achieve this goal that I never thought possible. A great program and team support is making it possible. You Can Too!’
