Mentors, Team Captains and Champions

We want to make sure every participant has the best possible Can Too experience and feels supported in their running/swimming and fundraising journey. And that's where Mentors, Team Captains and Champions come in to play.

All of our participants value your energy and enthusiasm and your experience adds to that of the participants. We need Mentors, Team Captains and Champions to spread the Can Too culture.

Could you be one?

How will you fulfil your role?

  • By being nurturing and engaging with every participant.
  • By inspiring, motivating, supporting and empowering all Can Tooers.
  • You will understand that people join Can Too for a variety of reasons - to improve their fitness, to meet people, or someone they know may have cancer or may have died from cancer.
  • By being empathic.
  • By infusing a sense of fun and friendship within the group. By being the keeper of Annie’s Story and focusing on the personal stories all Can Tooers bring.

How do I become a Mentor?

  • Mentors have completed 2 programs successfully (one of which must be in the event you would like to mentor for).
  • Mentors have shown that they can fundraise successfully and feel comfortable supporting others in fundraising and do not have any outstanding fundraising owed.
  • Potential mentors may be recommended by previous mentors, team captains or participants.
  • You enjoy sharing your fun, open personality and are happy to ‘wear the wig’ or join in anything silly and orange!
  • You fully understand the importance of our unique Can Too Culture.
  • You feel excited by the opportunity to give back and receive the intrinsic reward that entails.
  • You are prepared to attend the track/pool and Saturday sessions each week.
  • You are prepared to engage with your mentees at the sessions each week and keep in regular email contact.

What information do you need for me to become a Mentor?

We would love to hear your thoughts on:

  • Why you would like to mentor,
  • What you think you can bring to the role for your participants in terms of Fun, Fitness, Friendship and Fundraising, and
  • How you would Inspire, Motivate and & Support your participants.
  • How many times can I Mentor or Team Captain?

As a general rule we like to give you the opportunity to have a break and enjoy being a participant after having Mentored or Team Captained for two consecutive programs.

It’s great to share the leadership roles and allow others to bring their own experience and learnings to the Can Too program.

What do I do with any feedback I have about being a Mentor/ Team Captain?

We really value your input and would love to hear your thoughts on how we can make the Can Too experience even better for our participants:

  • We ask for your feedback and insights as to how the program is progressing via a face-to-face meeting or teleconference midway through the program.
  • We ask for formal feedback at the end of each program from all our Captains and Mentors.
  • Team Captains are contacted fortnightly for feedback, and to discuss any questions they may have about the program.

How do I become a Champion?

  • Having been a Mentor and a Team Captain at least twice - we recognise the contribution you have made to Can Too and we want to develop your leadership with a new opportunity. The next role that you may consider is a Champion.
  • A Champion floats amongst the pods supporting all Can Tooers, Team Captains and Mentors.
  • This is a twice a week commitment for a period of 12 months. If you are interested please let us know and we will consider your application and provide you with more information on the role.
