New York Marathon 2016

Marathon madness

I finally did it! We finally did it! The New York Marathon was everything I thought it would be and more. Saw the sights, walked and shopped, chatted with locals, ate fabulous food, spent time with family and friends and ran 42.2Km. Thanks to Can Too for organising this event and for taking such good care of the team. So proud that we all finished. So proud that we raised over $200,000 for cancer research. Check out my fundraising page and gallery for more pics!

7 Weeks to go!

The Blackmores Half Marathon was awesome. Great opportunity to run the Harbour Bridge, cruise around Sydney CBD and soak up the atmosphere! Three long runs left before NY. Getting Excited!

27km and going up!

My/our longest run to date. Great company to distract me from my tired legs..... Onwards and forwards!

Crazy Rain Runners

The Can Too Marathon Group are so dedicated that we even run in terrential rain! Sprinting back and forth across the Sydney Harbour Bridge ignoring the wind, rain, traffic and even interest from Bridge Security. The overall consensus is that we are a crazy bunch, but absolutely committed to raising funds for cancer research. If you agree that we are indeed nuts and need all the help we can get, please jump onto www.cantoo.org.au/fundraisers/SherynNewYorkMarathon and make a tax deductible donation. Thanks in advance. S

22km done and dusted!

Another fun start for our 22km run this morning.Wise words and directions from Coach Mike, special guest North Pole Marathon and 7 Marathons in 7 days runner and of course the lovely smiling faces of our New York Team. Sadly the first niggle in my preparation has popped up - a tender Achilles. Action plan for rest and recovery in place so I'll keep you posted. Won't let the niggle worm beat me.... to much to do and for a fantastic cause. Training on and fundraising for my $2000 target slowly climbing. Thanks to all my supporters and family and friends for helping out with the kids.

Less than 100 days to the race!

First long training run with our friends from the East Pod today. It was a chilly and dark start to the day at Centennial Park, however we all delighted in seeing the beautiful sunrise over the ocean. A deceptive 18km course with more hills and steps than us Northies are used to. Thanks to the Energy Champs to provided refreshments at Coogee. Great run everyone. Looking forward to 20km next week.

16 weeks to go

We are now at the end of week four of the 20 week lead up to the New York Marathon. A busy week with our first 5km time trial at the UTS track last Wednesday night in 'almost' Artic conditions. Then this morning the North Pod met the East Pod for the first time. We had a very scenic run from Kirribilli, across the bridge, under the bridge, around Barrangaroo to Cockle bay then over the bridge to the casino, and back. Everyone's legs are holding up well and we are having fun together. We are progressing well toward our fundraising target and I am looking forward to graduating to an orange shirt soon. Go Team New York!

20 weeks to go

Great to meet the North Pod Cant Too New York Marathon group this week. A chilly Wednesday night at the track. We warmed up quickly with some high knees, butt kicks, speedy feet and interval training. Then today we all faced the winter chill for a run across the Bridge. First week of training complete........ 19 to go!

Mother's Day Classic and SMH half marathon

Winter has rolled around and the early morning starts are getting colder, and harder. Had a fabulous May and riding that wave through the upcoming cooler weather. The Mother's Day Classic was alot of fun. A great little run around Sydney and a comfortable 8km. Loved the Zumba warm up, mountain of bananas at the finish line, and the jumping castle and superheros for the kids who came to cheer their wonderful mums. Followed up the next weekend with the SMH half marathon. Also another great run around Syndey city, the Rocks, and Barangaroo. Awesome crowd, lots of live music including the Navy Band and made it back in under 2 hours. Suprised myself and pulled up well the next week with no real niggles or complaints. So now, after a little break I have dusted of the cobwebs and been for a trot today. The training for the Blackmores half marathon and New York Marathon begins. Wish me luck!

Summer training progress

So I have invested in some new running shoes and have hit the ground running. Thank you to my supportive husband who bought me a Garmin GPS watch for Christmas. I think he was pleased to have inspiration for a gift and I was excited to have a piece of tech to help me on my way. So I can tell you that since Christmas 2015 I have run 332.48km! That's equivalent to running from the Sydney Opera House to Port Macquarie NSW (as the crow flies). Highlights so far have included participating in the 10km Sun Run from Dee Why to Manly, and also the 21km trail run around Manly Dam as part of the Sydney Trail Series. Back to the 5am wake up as training continues!

I'm training with Can Too for the New York Marathon!

I am training for an event with Can Too, a health promotion organisation that engages and inspires individuals and the community to achieve personal health, wellbeing and altruistic goals.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in endurance events- including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care and control of cancer. In 2015, the Can Too community has supported 13 early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia.

Thank you for supporting me!

‘It’s so much fun and I can’t believe I’m going to achieve this goal that I never thought possible. A great program and team support is making it possible. You Can Too!’
