Fundraising Overview:

Can Too : A Fundraising Program:

Can Too  is equally a fundraising program and an opportunity for you to achieve something you may never have thought possible- to realize your dreams. The primary goal is to raise as much money as possible for Cure Cancer Australia. At the same time we will do everything in our power to enable you to achieve your goal of training for and participating in an endurance event. In light of this we take your commitment to fundraising seriously. We want you to be successful in raising at least your minimum fundraising goal.

We have committed to give you the best possible training program that we can and you have committed to us that you will raise your funds. Together we can achieve our goals and dreams.

The following pages are designed to help you achieve your goals.

Macquarie Group Foundation: Principal Supporter:

We have been lucky enough to have Macquarie Bank as our founding partner. As such you can assure your sponsors that all the money that they sponsor you goes directly to Cure Cancer Australia.

Recommitment: Securing the place on the team:

Half way thorough your program  will ask you to “recommit”. This means that you need to have half of your funds raised and handed in to Cure Cancer Australia. Half way through the programwe will need to register you for your event. This is a cost incurred by us and so we must be confident that you will be a committed member of the Can Too Team.

Support from Lyn, Annie or your Mentor :

You are always welcome to call on either Lyn, Annie or your mentor to discuss your fundraising ideas.

Fundraising = Support

Many of us were raised with the notion that talking about money is bad and asking people for it is worse! Take a moment to examine your own beliefs about asking others to contribute money. Do you feel that by asking someone for sponsorship that you are asking them to make a real sacrifice? Do you feel that you are imposing on them, or putting them on the spot?

We all have notions and beliefs surrounding the subject of money. These are just a couple. Given this new commitment that you have taken on, it is a good time to examine and revise some of these notions and beliefs.

Let’s look at the idea of a contribution to Cure Cancer Australia. Firstly you are not asking for money for yourself. You are asking money for a really wonderful cause, a cause that may actually help save the lives of the people you are asking for a contribution. Every one we know, knows or loves someone that has cancer or has died of cancer. Research saves lives!! This is a really positive step.

Is the contribution really a sacrifice? Does it really make people feel uncomfortable?

How would you feel if someone you knew asked you to contribute to something that they were involved with? Would you be happy to give them support? People usually feel good supporting a great cause. Often they wish they were doing what you were doing but are unable to do so. They may even welcome the chance to support you. Do not assume people do not want to help. They may feel insulted that you felt that you could not ask.

Taking that first step.

In the following pages we give you many ideas and suggestions to help you with your fundraising. We do suggest however that the email or letter is the backbone of your strategy. We have included some examples of emails and letters to help you in writing yours. You will be surprised, excited and touched at the response. I promise you!!!!

Write your fundraising email/letter. See further pages for detail

Think about the other fundraising ideas that we have listed that you would be happy and comfortable doing.

Fundraising letter/email follow up

You composed an inspiring fundraising email or letter. You mailed or emailed it to over 150 friends, family, acquaintances and colleagues, but you still haven’t reached your fundraising minimum. Do not be concerned.

FOLLOW UP! Don’t forget we live in a busy world. People need reminders. Just because they didn’t respond straight away does not mean that they do not want to support you. Maybe they just haven’t got around to it, or maybe they even accidentally deleted your email.  A few gentle reminders of your training progress and fundraising deadline will greatly assist in raising your funds. You may have to send up to three updates of your great progress to your sponsors!

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE! Talk to your sponsors and potential sponsors about your training and how much you have achieved. Tell them about how you are dodging sharks on a weekly basis. They will be impressed! They may not be able to achieve what you are achieving, but they can share in your experience!!

Don’t hold back your donations.
We would encourage you to ask people to donate online. However if they prefer they can send a check or give cash. You can always give it to Lyn or Annie on Wednesday or Saturday or send the check to the Cure Cancer office directly. If you are given cash you could send it to Cure Cancer via your credit card. Don’t forget to include your sponsor’s name and address.

Testimonials from past participants:

What a great experience, Cantoo is a well structured, organised and fun programme, appropriate for participants of all standards, the emphasis remains on the fundraising and the guest speakers are informative and varied. I would encourage anyone interested in the programme to register, I thought I would be out of my depth, but I

was encouraged to improve and given realistic goals along the way.

Just wanted to let you know how much being apart of Cantoo has meant to me.  The people I have met are amazing, and everyone is the same – no one asks “What do you do for work” etc…we are just all the same, training and raising money for a great cause. Margaux

It has been such a great honour to be part of Can Too, not only for the personal challenges but also raising funds for cancer research.  It is a subject very close to my heart, as a friend of mine has, this week, gone into palliative care.  Things are not good for her.  I'm dedicating my swim to her. Danielle

And while I am writing, I should let you know that I am loving the program so much. There is absolutely NO WAY I would be able to motivate
myself to get up and run 15K on a saturday morning on my own. It is so great to have people to run with - and for such a great cause.
And selfishly - I am really excited about seeing how much I am improving. So thanks!! Fiona
